The centre of Split is the Roman palace built by Emperor Diocletian as an extremely grand retirement home. Far from being a ruin like most Roman palaces, this one is a living, breathing monument. The ancient walls contain temples and a basilica now used as churches, apartments, shops, restaurants, hotels and cafés; the place positively buzzes with activity. Hoards of tourists follow the expert guides around and are entertained by Dalmatian Klapa multipart a capella singing, and the locals throng the cafés and the streets.
